Football Falls to Sequoias in Season Opener

Oroville, Calif. - Sophomore Tanner Hughes threw for 243 turnover-less yards with three touchdowns, but the Butte football team fell to Sequoias 39-33, in the season opener on Saturday afternoon.

Hughes found his top target in sophomore receiver Jailen Hammer, who wrapped the day with seven receptions for 143 yards. Hammer opened the contest with a 29 yard reception for a touchdown in just 19 seconds of play. He added a pair of late touchdowns, including a quick 60-yard score and the final touchdown for the Roadrunners with 1:14 remaining on a 27-yard pass.

Freshman Christian Vaughn paced the Roadrunner backfield with a score of his own in the third quarter.

Defensively, sophomore linebacker Elijah O'Neal racked up nine solo tackles, including a pair of sacks for a total loss of 12 yards. Sophomore Grant Garretson and freshman Thiessen Wright added seven solo each with Wright earning a tackle for loss.

Freshman defensive back Cameron Carr was also a bright spot for the defense, tallying a pick-six for 60 yards late in the fourth quarter.

Sophomore Dante Jackson got the nod for both kicking and punting duties, posting perfect numbers for extra points and pinning two of his five punts within the 20-yard line with a long of 44 yards.

Butte (0-1) heads out on the road next to No. 17 Diablo Valley on Friday, Sept. 9. Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m.
