Vaughn's Ground Game Propels No. 9 Football over No. 11 Modesto

Oroville, Calif. - Sophomore running back Christian Vaughn racked up 260 yards over 33 carries to propel the No. 9 Butte football team to a 28-17 win over No. 11 Modesto on Saturday afternoon.

Vaughn tallied a pair of touchdowns with a long of 52 yards. Sophomore quarterback Rieger Sayers added 64 yards of rushing with a touchdown.

The defense also shined in the win, with sophomore defensive back Malcolm Dewalt counting a pair of interceptions of the five total picks by the Roadrunners in the game. Sophomore linebacker Gabe Foster returned his pick for 40 yards, adding five total tackles - two for loss for six yards - with a sack.

Sophomores linebacker Aiden Sullivan and defensive back Marvelous Owens both racked up seven total tackles and combined for 1.5 tackles for loss for five yards. Freshman linebacker Gabe Ponce ended the game with four tackles - three solo - with two tackles for loss and an interception.

The 2013 National Championship team was honored at the game for the 10th-anniversary of its historic season, led by player of the championship game, quarterback Tommy Stuart, offensive player of the championship game, tight end Richard Murphy, and All-American tight end Bo Brummel.

The Roadrunners (3-1) remain home to close out the first half of the season by hosting No. 1 San Mateo next on Saturday, Sept. 30. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.
