Livermore, Calif. - Freshman Jordan Saunders and sophomore Anthony Montoya combined for 29 points, but the Butte men's basketball team came up short in its season opener at Las Positas, 80-77, on Thursday evening in the Tony Costello Tip-Off.
Saunders went 5-for-8 off the bench for a team-high 15 points, while Montoya counted 14 points with six boards and three steals. Freshmen Donnell Basden and Jessy Maximin both chipped in 12 points, while freshman Rashad Samuels rounded out the players in double-figures with 10 points.
Maximin and sophomore Tanner Stephens pulled down 10 rebounds apiece, while Basden added six.
Butte (0-1) continues competition in the Tony Costello Tip-Off, facing Contra Costa on Friday, Nov. 3 at 2 p.m.
