Men Take Black and Gold Invite Title; Women Finish Second
Oroville, Calif. - The Butte men's track and field team took the Black and Gold Invite title, while the women's team finished second on Friday.
The men's team edged Chico State by 20 points, finishing with with 194 team points. The women's team scored 102.5, besting Delta, who finished with 81, but trailed Redwoods who finished with 129.
Freshmen Parker Williams (10.98) and Carter Gregerson (11.11) kicked off the scoring for the Roadrunners in the 100 meters, finishing fifth and ninth, respectively. Carr finished third in the 200 meters (23.06) with Gregorson adding three more points with a sixth place mark in a time of 23.31.
In the 400 meters, freshmen Zack Maze (52.26) and Luke Bagwell (53.25) took fourth and seventh, while in the 800 meters, Butte took the top three spots, as well as seventh. Sophomore Cristofer Velazquez-Patino (2:01.95), and freshmen Wyatt Stanhope (2:06.18) and Steven Silva (2:08.07) were the top finishers with freshman Frederick Southworth finishing in 2:16.64. Stanhope also placed fifth in the 1,500 meters in a time of 4:35.67.
Sophomore Robert Moncrief and freshmen Mark Velazquez-Patino and Lex Cornicuic combined for 23 points in the 10,000 meters with Moncrief winning the event in 34:42.84, M. Velazquez-Patino taking second in 35:38.14, and Cornicuc placing fourth in 40:47.44.
In the hurdles, freshman Steele Flores tallied a total of three points in the 110 meter (18.63) and 400 meter (1:03.25) hurdles with ninth and eight place finishes, respectively.
Moncrief earned a B mark in the 3,000 meter steeplechase, besting his personal record, finishing second in a time of 10:01.07 with Southworth placing third in 10:42.32.
And in the relays, the 4x100 relay of sophomore Tre Patterson, freshman Maxwell Carter, Williams, and Gregerson placed second in 43.19, while the 4x400 relay of Bagwell, Maze, Carr, and freshman Thomas Colvin won the event in 3:35.59.
In the field events, both sophomores Noah Doratt (1.80) and Patterson (1.75) earned B marks in the high jump, while freshman Nate Southworth tied for seventh in the pole vault (3.35).
Carter finished second in the long jump (6.37) with Patterson tying for fifth (6.08) and freshman Skyler Sakrison finished eighth (5.84). Sakrison and Patterson finished fourth (11.99) and fifth (11.88), respectively, in the triple jump.
In men's shot put, freshmen Quamire Jones and Takeshi Faulpula took the top two spots with B marks of 13.85 and 13.82, respectively, with Jones also winning discus with a throw of 42.24. Faulpula placed fourth in hammer with a throw of 43.56 and javelin (44.70). F. Southworth finished third (46.00) in javelin with Colvin placing seventh (40.56).
On the women's side, freshman Reagan Marroquin had a breakout day in her first meet of the year, placing third in the 100 meters (12.77) and fourth in the 200 meters (27.21). Sophomore Mariah Letcher placed eighth in the 200 meters (29.32) and second in the 400 meters (1:04.18).
In the 800 meters, sophomore Risa Reynier finished third (2:44.75), followed by sophomore Kayti Russell in fifth place (3:09.85). Russell also finished the 1,500 meters in 6:41.22. Reynier placed second in the 3,000 meter steeplechase with a B mark time of 12:55.90 and fifth in the 10,000 meters (49.45.19). Sophomore Grace Becker ran a personal best in the 10,000 meters in a time of 47:54.88, good for third.
Sophomore Baylee Bowles jumped a B mark height of 1.45 in high jump for fourth place, while freshman Jenna Curti placed third with a B mark height of 2.89 in pole vault. Curti also placed fifh in long jump with a mark of 4.61, while Bowles finished third in the triple jump (8.51).
Freshman Salma Gonzales finished second in shot put with a mark of 10.55, and freshman Joanna Caranza placing fifth in discus (31.21), seventh in hammer (29.00), and fourth in javelin (28.15). And sophomore Julia Norman threw an A mark and personal best 40.17 in javelin.
The men's and women's track and field teams head to the Chico Twilight meet next on Saturday, Apr. 20.
