Five Runners Punch Tickets to CCCAA Championships; Both Teams Finish Ninth

Fortuna, Calif. - Five cross country runners punched their tickets to the CCCAA Championships, while both teams finished ninth at the NorCal Championships on Saturday morning.

On the women's side, sophomore Ariana Smedley placed 26th overall out of the field of 80 in a time of 23:36 in the 5,000-meter race. Freshman Risa Reynier was 39th, finishing in 24:32. This will mark the first CCCAA Championships for both.

Freshmen Grace Becker placed 51st (25:29), Elizaeth Saldana finished 60th (26:39), and Kayti Russell was 65th (27:27) to round out the scorers.

Sophomore Matthew Garcia was the top finisher on the men's side (20th - 23:09) with sophomores Jeremiah Knoch (38th - 23:58) and Michael Sides (41st - 24:02) rounding out the state qualifiers.

Freshmen Cristofer Velazquez-Patino (61st -24:56) and Zane Kowalkowski (77th - 25:47) were the two others to place for scoring out of the 108-runner field in the four-mile race.

The five state qualifiers will head to Fresno for the CCCAA Championships on Saturday, Nov. 19. The women's race will begin at 10 a.m., and the men's race will follow at 11 a.m.
