Berkowitz, Wahl Headed to Next Level

Oroville, Calif. - Softball catcher Laney Berkowitz and pitcher/first baseman Savannah Wahl are headed to the next level to continue their athletic and academic careers, announced Wednesday.

Berkowitz, who inked with NCAA Division II Chico State, captured a number of awards throughout last season, being the lone Roadrunner to be named to the CCCAA Championship All-Tournament Team, All-State, and All-GVC. She intends on majoring in business at Chico State.

"Our Butte College Athletics is like family here and putting its teams first, so it makes me want that from any program I have and to engage with the entire staff," Berkowitz said.

Wahl, who will be donning a Sacramento State jersey next season, earned a slew of accolades during the 2022 softball season, including CoSIDA Academic All-American, Golden Valley Conference Pitcher of the Year, 3CFCA NorCal All-State NorCal Pitcher of the Year, NFCA First Team Cal JC Division All-American, and Butte College Female Athlete of the Year. She also took care of business in the classroom with a perfect 4.0 GPA with multiple degrees in Social and Behavioral Science, Kinesiology, Psychology, and Biology.

"I don't think I could have done this without coming to Butte. I've just learned so much here, and like Laney said, the family aspect," Wahl said. "I've always worked hard, but when I got here I really learned what work ethic is - be on time, show up, and work hard - and that will give you the results that you want."

Chico State finished its 2022 campaign with a 37-17 overall record, 26-10 in the CCAA, advancing to the Irvine Regional. Sacramento State (NCAA Division I) went 30-25 last season, 12-6 in the Big Sky.
