Women's Basketball Captures Gilcrest Tournament Title

Visalia, Calif. - Four Roadrunners reached double-figures to lead the Butte women's basketball team to the 46th Annual Gilcrest Tournament title with a 78-69 victory over host Sequoias on Saturday evening.

The Roadrunners handed Sequoias its first loss of the season, despite being edged early in the contest. Butte rebounded from the first 10 minutes, outscoring the Giants 20-13, and taking a 40-36 lead in to halftime. The Roadrunners continued to gradually build on their lead, outscoring Sequoias each of the second-half quarters.

Freshman Sarah Tait paced all scorers with 19 points, while sophomore Meghan Weinrich added another double-double with 17 points and 10 assists with six boards. Sophomore Sanaya Shrader and freshman Jordan Arreola rounded out the top scorers with 14 and 13 points, respectively. Shrader also pulled down a game-high 14 rebounds.

Butte outrebounded Sequoias 42-30, with 20 offensive boards. The Roadrunners scored 24 points on second-chance opportunities, while edging the Giants with points in the paint, 34-26.

Butte (11-1) returns to action on Thursday, Dec. 8. The team heads to Folsom Lake for a 6 p.m. tip.
