Bio

Tyler Newton took over the helm of Butte women's basketball in 2017, bringing a wealth of knowledge and experience to the program and has taken the program to an elite. level that can compete with any team in the state. Since taking over the program, the women's basketball program, every sophomore has graduated and been offered a scholarship from a four-year school

During the 2021-22 season, he led the Roadrunners again to an impressive 23-7 mark, including going undefeated in the Golden Valley Conference en route to back-to-back conference titles. The team advanced to the CCCAA Championships for the first time in 20 years. Newton was named the California Community College NorCal Coach of the Year, while freshman Meghan Weinrich was named All-State.

Prior to COVID-19 in 2019-20, Newton's program posted a 23-7 record, leading to a top 10 ranking in the state and winning the first league title in 10 years. 

Before joining Butte, Newton spent two years as the head coach of the varsity girls basketball program at Pleasant Valley High School, where he led the program to a combined 48-9 record, including two undefeated league and section titles. He also served as the head assistant men's basketball coach at Shasta College for two years. 

Newton has served as an individual skills coach for the past 10-plus years, making numerous connections in the basketball community by helping players develop and earn collegiate scholarships. 

As an athlete, Newton was inducted into the Shasta College Athletics Hall of Fame after a successful community college career before transferring to NCAA Division I University of the Pacific. With the Tigers, he led the program to two Big West titles and a No. 14 national ranking as a senior. After his collegiate career, he played overseas professionally for seven years in five different countries.

Newton has earned two master’s degrees in athletic administration and exercise science.
