Track and Field Wins Both GVC Team Titles, 13 Events; Hays Tabbed Coach of the Year

Redding, Calif. - The Butte men's and women's track and field teams were both crowned Golden Valley Conference champions, while winning 13 events on Friday. Head coach Jon Hays was named the Coach of the Year for both genders.

On the women's side, Butte scored 128.5 points with Redwoods in second with 93.5. And on the men's side, Butte earned 117 points with Yuba in second with 79.

Sophomore Julia Norman captured four individual titles, while helping both relay teams to finish first. Norman won the high jump (1.50), long jump (5.03), triple jump (10.44), and javelin (38.68), before teaming up with freshmen Jenna Curti and Reagan Marroquin and sophomore Talynn Schroeder to win the 4x100 meter relay (49.57). She wrapped up the day with the 4x400 relay with Curti and sophomores Risa Reynier and Mariah Letcher (4:21.21).

Curti earned the pole vault title (2.90), while Schroeder won the 100 meter hurdles (16.38). And freshman Salma Gonzales rounded out the women, winning shot put with a throw of 10.97.

On the men's side, sophomore Robert Moncrief tallied wins in both of the longest distance runs - 5,000 meters (16:16.45) and 10,000 meters (34.42.84). Freshman Quamire Jones won discus (40.37), and the group of sophomore Brandon Smith and freshmen Luke Bagwell, Thomas Colvin, and Zack Maze took home the 4x400 meter relay title (3:33.37).

The track and field teams head to the NorCal Prelims and Finals next, hosted by American River College. THe two-day event begins on Friday, May 3.
